A wide range of information relating to the historic and archaeological environment is held at the Cambridgeshire Historic Environment Record. This includes:

- Chance finds, such as scatters of pottery or finds from metal-detecting.
- Details of excavations, ranging from those in the 19th century to the present day.
- Information gained from field surveys, such as artefact scatters and historic landscape features.
- Cropmarks identified from aerial photographs, which can indicate the presence of buried ditches or structures.
- Documentary evidence, such as windmills and water pumps depicted on historic maps.
We also hold additional information relating to:
- The Cambridge Urban Archaeological Database (UAD), a database of archaeological remains within the historic core of Cambridge;
- Scheduled Ancient Monuments, archaeological sites of national importance that are afforded statutory protection; and
- Listed buildings of special architectural or historic interest.
