Huntingdonshire

Huntingdonshire Archives holds a great variety of maps and plans for Huntingdonshire.

If you are interested in a particular town or village then please start by consulting catalogues nos. 5 and 6, available in the searchroom. These will give you the document reference numbers for most of the maps we have. Archives staff will be able to tell you more about the individual maps themselves, and whether or not the maps listed will be of use to your specific research enquiry.

If you are interested in the county as a whole, or in out-of-county maps, then start by asking to see the 1968 guide Maps in the County Record Office. Although out of print, the annotated office copy of this book includes document reference numbers, and includes some details about the maps themselves, such as their dimensions, or the names of the cartographers.

There are still some maps which are not yet included in any searchroom guide or catalogue (although many are nevertheless included in the General Index). The bulk of these are maps and plans received from local government bodies, such as the collection of Huntingdonshire County Council Surveyors' Department plans. Record Office staff will be able to help.

Numerous maps of Huntingdonshire are held elsewhere. The Norris Museum in St Ives has a good collection (tel. 01480 497314); copies of the list of Norris Museum maps are available in catalogues numbers 5 and 6: Maps. There are also many maps in the Huntingdonshire Collection at Huntingdon Library. Copies of the list of printed maps held there are also available in catalogues nos. 5 and 6.
