Huntingdonshire Archives has a rich collection of old photographs and postcards for the Huntingdonshire area. You may have seen some of our photographs published in popular books such as Gordon Winter A Country Camera 1844-1914 (1966), Christopher Dunn The Book of Huntingdon (1977), and David Cozens Huntingdon: A Pictorial History (1995).
The majority of our photographs are indexed by place in the illustrations index in the searchroom. In addition, many of the photographic prints (including the towns of Huntingdon, Godmanchester, St Ives and St Neots) have been photocopied, for ease of reference: files containing these copies are available in the searchroom.
The most significant single collection of photographs held here is the Whitney Collection of prints and negatives, taken by the Huntingdon firm of photographers, Maddison and Hinde. The catalogue for the Whitney Collection has been made available for searching online, as part of the Access to Archives (A2A) project.
Please note that for security reasons no more than three individual original photographs may be consulted at any one time.
Reproductions
Photocopies of most of our photographs can be made, for private research only. Photographic reprints of some original photographs may also be ordered, again only for private use or research: please discuss with a member of staff if you wish to order prints.
You may not use prints or photocopies supplied in this way for publication. This includes publication in a magazine article, a book, a birthday or Christmas card, a CD-ROM, a website, or any other form.
If you wish to publish an image of any document or photograph held at Huntingdonshire Archives you must discuss this with an archivist first.
