Marriage Allegations
Marriage licences were sometimes issued so that marriages could take place without banns being read. Before the Diocese could issue a licence the parties had to sign an allegation, affirming their intention to marry. This allegation would be accompanied by a bond, an assurance signed by friends or relatives that the couple would be married in a specific church.
The licences themselves for the Archdeaconry of Huntingdon do not survive, but an extensive collection of allegations and bonds 1662-1883 has been deposited at the Record Office. They have been indexed alphabetically by name. PDF versions of sections of the index (due to its size, the index has been split into four) are available by clicking on the relevant link in the righthand column. We are grateful to Huntingdonshire Archives volunteer John Archer for typing up this index.
