The collection includes holdings of over 40 newspaper titles dating from 1762 in either original print editions, microfiche or microfilm copies.
The Cambridgeshire Collection holds:
- The Cambridge Daily/Evening News 1888 - current
- The Cambridge Chronicle 1762 - 1934
- The Cambridge Independent Press 1815 - 1981 (continued as Cambridge Weekly News to date)
The Cambridge Evening News, Cambridge Weekly News, Property News and Varsity are kept as hard copy for a year, older issues are available on microfilm
Newspaper Cuttings
There are cuttings on over 750 topics from the local and national press for the last 40 years:
- News including planned events (eg. foundation stone laying) and dramatic events (eg. crimes)
- Feature articles - poverty, "How the Parish Council works in...", etc
- Advertisements - sales and public notices Timetables - Illustrations - "modern" such as the latest open top bus or "historic" such as "Peeps from the Past" features
There are several indexes to the newspapers in the Collection locating stories relating to places, events, individuals and photographs
