The Cottage Home for Little Orphan Girls

This handbill of 1870 invites subscriptions for a home for destitute little girls founded at the suggestion and with the generous pecuniary help of Mr A.C. P Coote and Mr. H.J. Watney, members of St. John’s College. The proposal was warmly taken up and substantially assisted by many kind friends both in the Town and University.

A site was secured on Fitzwilliam Road, Cambridge for £240. The home built for £475, and the first four girls were admitted on 1 January 1872.

Its name remained unchanged until 1948 when it became known as the Church of England’s Children Society Home. From 1951 it was run as Dr. Barnado’s Cottage Home until 1972 when it was purchased by the County Council for use as a Boys’ Hostel.
