...one dose clears the head of Maggots and whimsies

Take two ounces of the spirits of Reason Three Ounces of the Powder of experience five drams of Juice of Discretion Six ounces of the powder of Good advice and two spoonfuls of the cooling water of Consideration, make it into a pills and drink a little Content after them. One dose clears the head of Maggots and whimsies, then take another dose and drink a little Content and you’ll be restored to your right Senses...

The author of this tongue-in cheek recipe (or ‘receipt’ as then known) is unknown but the hand is very similar to that of Richard Angier of Coton born 1788. Various account books belonging to this gentleman and other records of the family’s extensive estates in Barton and Coton survive alongside this item in the Rayner Collection.
