During the 19th century the upper and middle classes tended to pick as their marriage partners people who were visibly their social equals. This image shows a well-to-do Huntingdonshire wedding group, photographed by local photographer Arthur Maddison in 1880.

The wedding was that of Caroline Maria Burnaby and Lieutenant John Rolleston Prickett, RN, and took place in Brampton on 20 January 1880. Caroline was thirty when she married. The Burnabys were a major family in Brampton at the time, living in Brampton Manor House.

Lieutenant John Rolleston Prickett was 31 at his marriage and came from Bridlington. By 1906 he had gained the rank of Commander in the Royal Navy.
The couple were married by Caroline's father, Rev. Frederick Burnaby, who died only ten days after the ceremony. Caroline continued to live at Brampton Manor House with her mother. She appears, without her husband, in the Manor House at the time of the 1881 census.
