Giants, Wisewomen, Ploughboys and Kings a performing arts project exploring traditions of the Fens

This three-year performing arts project to explore the heritage and traditions of the Fens  toured 22 schools in the Fenland area of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk over three years, from 2005 to 2007.

The project aimed to provide the children with a feeling of cultural identity and an understanding of the character of the Fens through hearing stories and exploring past seasonal customs.

Pupils explored the rituals of local song and dance with musicians and Molly Dancers. The project has worked in 22 fenland schools, with 24 classes involved.

Over 700 pupils have worked with the artists, learning at least 2 molly dances, with some mastering as many as 6. There have been 25 dramatisations of 12 local stories.

The Ouse Washes Molly dancers have performed at 34 separate events. The number of people who can now molly dance is probably the greatest at any time in the last 100 years.

Audience numbers probably exceed 5,000 local residents, so more people know about local story and traditions that at any time in the past 100 years.

Children visited local heritage sites to research stories, and work alongside artists back at school to dramatise their stories, entwining them with traditional dance and music, which were all publicly performed.

Experts in the traditions were brought together for the project. These experts include the Ouse Wash Molly Dancers, who specialise in traditional dance and teaching the cultural significance of certain dances.

The Heritage Lottery Fund provided £130,000 of funding for the project Giants, Wisewomen, Ploughboys and Kings.
