Is your New Year's resolution to join a book group?
We have space for new members in many of our library-based reading groups ... and where there aren't spaces, if there is enough interest, we can start a new group. Please do have a word with library staff or email the reading group librarian if you'd like to join a group.
In particular, there are spaces at two of the new Huntingdon groups: 'Sophie's Choice' and 'The Book Thieves'. Both of these have changed their start time by half an hour, so if they didn't suit you before, they may suit you now. 'Sophie's Choice' meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6pm (used to be 5:30) and 'The Book Thieves' meet on the 4th Thursday of the month at 4pm (used to be 4:30).
At Central Library, Cambridge we have spaces in one of our daytime general reading groups - the Engage Reading Group, which meets on the 4th Monday at 2pm; one of our evening groups is full, and the other took a break towards the end of last year, but we're planning on starting it up again, probably on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 6pm. We also have spaces in our poetry reading group and non-fiction book group.
Many other libraries also have groups with spaces. If you'd like to join any of these groups, or for more information, have a word with a member of staff at your local library or email the reading group librarian (details below).
Online book group latest book ...
This months book is 'Black Swan Green' by David Mitchell. If you need a copy, please email the reading group librarian. The discussion will be starting soon at cambridgeshirebookclub.wordpress.com. Do visit the site and add your comments to the discussion when you've had a chance to read the book.
Anyone is welcome to post on the site, but if you would like to 'join' the group, please contact the reading group librarian. This will get you onto the email mailing list to find out when a new discussion starts, and also to get a copy of the book sent to your nearest Cambridgeshire Library.
Reading for Relaxation group - Wisbech Library
This informal shared reading group is for anyone who wants to relax and unwind, and may be of particular interest to those dealing with mental health issues. The group meets every Monday at 1pm in the meeting room upstairs at the library, to read prose and poetry designed to lift the mood. Anyone is welcome to come along - it is a 'read aloud' group - you can either join in the reading or, if you prefer, just relax and be read to! For more information, please contact the reading group lbrarian.
Services for reading groups
Many libraries have reading groups that meet regularly and are open to new members. Speak to library staff to see if there is a group in your library or contact the reading group librarian.
Some groups meet in the work place, in members’ homes or in locations such as pubs, cafés or village halls.
If you are a member of one of these groups or would like to set one up, we can offer advice such as how to use a reading group ticket and how to check on the catalogue for available books. We can also help with choosing books and promoting discussion.
For more information, speak to staff at your local library or contact the reading group librarian at brenda.mead@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or 07766 510217
