Ordnance Survey Landranger maps
This series covers the whole of Britain in 204 sheets at a scale of 1:50,000. Our larger libraries hold complete sets of these maps which can be borrowed. They are also available for reference only. Our smaller libraries hold reference copies of the four sheets covering Cambridgeshire.
If you want to borrow a map for a particular area you can request it from our catalogue and pick it up at your local library. Maps, like books, are free to borrow for three weeks.
Most of our loan copies are laminated editions which are fully waterproof so that they can be used outdoors in all weathers - ideal for a walking or cycling trip or holiday.
Ordnance Survey Explorer maps
Ordnance Survey also produce more detailed maps including the orange-covered Explorer series at 1:25,000 and many of our libraries hold copies of these. The local collections at Cambridge, Huntingdon and Wisbech hold both current and historic editions of maps at various scales and will be happy to advise.
Maps and copyright
Copyright rules allow a small number of photocopies or printouts to be made for personal, non-commercial purposes. For commercial use (including planning applications) a fee must be paid to Ordnance Survey.
Geograph
Ordnance Survey sponsors the Geograph project which is building up a resource of photographs showing features of the landscape in every square kilometre of the country, often with detailed descriptions. The project was started five years ago and has so far built up over 2 million images which can be searched by entering a place name, grid reference or postcode, providing a fascinating resource. Any photographer is welcome to contribute and there are weekly awards for the best images, so why not get your camera out?
