Museums are all about objects and every museum has expertise in the type of material held in their collections. Curators of museums large and small, volunteer and professional, are usually very willing to share their expertise and their knowledge to help identify objects, and to explain more about them.
If you would like more information about an object you own and think that a museum may be able to help, please remember the following:
- Think about which museum is most likely to have the expertise necessary to answer your query – if in doubt contact the Museums Office for guidance
- If you want to show the object to a Curator do contact the Museum in advance to arrange a convenient time
- Gather together as much information you have about your object, it may assist in the identification process
- If you have access to the internet consider sending your enquiry by e.mail and attaching an image file
- Be aware that no museum will give a valuation of your object. If you want an assessment of value you need to go to an auctioneer, valuer or sale room.
