Guidance after flooding

Specific guidance for citizens after flooding or returning home after flooding:

  • contact your insurer as soon as possible
  • check the safety of electricity and gas before use
  • avoid contact with flood water or items that have had contact with flood water
  • boil tap water before use until it is declared safe by the water company
  • wash hands regularly
  • dispose of any contaminated food
  • seek medical assistance if any health issues appear
  • ventilate your property
  • do not throw rubbish and furniture outdoors, wait for organised collections
  • avoid using unlicensed traders
