Guidance during flooding

Specific flood guidance to help you during a flood or if evacuation is required because of flooding.

  • continue to listen to local radio
  • keep dry and out of flood water
  • stay in your property, if safe to do so or as advised by the emergency services
  • do not drive through flood water
  • do not walk in flood water or on river banks, sea defences or cross bridges over torrential rivers
  • avoid contact with flood water and wash hands before handling food or attending to wounds
  • do not allow children to play around high water, drians or any flooded areas

Should evacuation become necessary:

  • stay calm and do not panic
  • emergency services and other officials will try and visit all properties at risk to advise on evacuation
  • if road conditions permit, move vehicles to unaffected areas
  • you will hear about your evacuation point for transport and the location of rest centres verbally or via a leaflet
  • try to check on elderly/vulnerable family members or neighbours and ensure they know about the evacuation
  • try and inform family or friends of where you are being evacuated to
  • listen to the advice of emergency services/local council and follow any instructions to leave a property
  • disconnect all electrical appliances

Guidance for being prepared for flooding and after flooding is also available that includes measures you can take to protect your home and valuables.
