Question:
Who can adopt?
Answer:
All sorts of people can make a success of adoption. You can
- be single, living together, married or divorced, or gay/lesbian – singles or couples
- be in or out of work
- live in or out of Cambridge, and can own or rent your home, but you do need to have enough space to care for a child as they grow
We welcome enquiries from people of all backgrounds, race and ethnic and cultural groups.
You will need plenty of patience, humour and energy. Above all, you will need to be determined to give a child the kind of support that will really make a difference to their lives.
You need to be over 21 years of age except when a parent is adopting her/his child with his/her partner who may be 18 to 20 years.
In the case of a couple, either both most have been habitually resident in a part of the British Isles for at least a year or one of them must be domicile there.
If you have children, it is recommended that there should be a gap of at least two years between your children and any child placed with you.
If you have been involved in infertility investigations or treatment, Cambridgeshire County Council would expect these to have been completed before any assessment was started
