Some people with learning disabilities live with their families or close friends, who are sometimes called their "carers".
The term "carer" does not apply to paid care staff.
Sometimes, carers need a break or some time off - this could be an hour, a day or a week. Carers can have their own assessment of needs.
If you are a carer the assessment provides an opportunity to discuss:
- your own needs
- how you find (and feel about) caring for the person with learning disabilities
- whether you wish to, or are able to, continue caring
- the services needed
You can ask for a carers assessment by contacting your local Learning Disability Partnership Team.
There is a range of services and activities available to people with learning disabilities including:
- residential short breaks
- Adult Placement Scheme
- support in your home
