Question:
Can I have some help with housework from social care services?
Answer:
Social care services arranged by the council are not able to help people who only need help with housework or cleaning.
If you do require housework help only try:
- Age Concern local office on 01354 696677 or
- Commission for Social Care Inspection "Services Directory" and look for "Home Care Agencies"
- Yellow Pages - look for "Cleaning Services - Domestic"
Social care services may be able to assist with housework issues, but only if the individual meets our eligibility criteria and has a health risk which needs a housework service to reduce its effect. (see Accessing social care for adults)
No organisations currently have any regulatory powers over domestic agencies that only do cleaning, housework or shopping. However, the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) register and inspect Domiciliary (Home) Care agencies which provide personal care services. If an agency that is registered and inspected also provides cleaning, shopping and/or housework then CSCI may investigate a complaint around those areas because they would want to be sure that the agency itself was acting appropriately.
