Advocacy
An advocate is a person who helps an individual to voice their views, ask for what they need and speak up for their rights. Friends and relatives may often act in this role. However there are occasions when there might be a conflict in views or a service user does not have a person to support them.
The County Council currently contracts with Speaking Up to provide the latter of these; short term, issue based advocacy. Advocacy support might be needed at the stage where the young person is moving from Children’s to Adult Services.
Support may also be needed for areas of an individual’s life, for example, advice, information or support to understand or read materials or complete forms. Service users might need to be directed towards other non-advocacy services to have these needs met.
