What is Community Transport

Community Transport provides journeys for people who have difficulty using conventional public transport.

Who can use Community Transport?

Although all schemes wish to be as open as possible, the majority of the schemes are restricted to those meeting the following criteria:

  • Those who do not have access to public transport and do not have access to their own car.
  • Those who experience difficulty using public transport, i.e. because of a disability or age.
  • Those who are socially or rurally isolated from accessing basic public services and facilities, such as healthcare.

How does it operate?

These services mainly involve a workforce of dedicated volunteers, giving up their time to help others to provide transport services. Some services are provided by not-for-profit transport providers, who reinvest any income made back into their services.

Each scheme operates in a way best suited to their locality and the communities they serve. Cambridgeshire County Council is extremely grateful to all those who have made this happen.

Community Transport guide

The material on these web pages is taken from the Community Transport Guide. This booklet explains what community transport is, how to use it, and who offers transport in your area. The Guide lists contact details of schemes by district.

Plus also see the four District leaflets which give the contact details and a description of each scheme by District. ie East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire (including Cambridge City)

Please see below to download a copy of the Community Transport Guide or the leaflet for each District. Paper copies of all these documents are available upon request from the Community Transport Officer.

We are keen to develop further Community Transport schemes within the County, particularly schemes that can complement existing passenger transport. We provide assistance in setting up schemes and support all schemes thereafter.

For information and advice on setting up a scheme, please telephone or contact the Community Transport Officer.
