Cycle helmets do not prevent accidents but if an accident does happen, they prevent injury to the most important part of the body - the head.
Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of serious injury and could even save your life.
When choosing a helmet look for the following recognised safety standards:
- BS6863 - British Standard
- AS2063 - Australian Standard
- ANS1Z90.4 - American Standard
- SNELL
But it is just as important to ensure the helmet is fitted correctly and worn correctly, and remember a helmet is designed to absorb only one impact.
If you drop your helmet from anything over a metre in height then replace it, because it will no longer protect you in a collision.
