The Busway is guided, but why?

Why is the Busway guided?

• Studies have shown that the level of use is greater than that for bus lanes or bus-only roads.

• The smoothness of the track provides higher ride quality for passengers and a greater ability for level boarding.

• Buses can travel in opposite directions closer together as they are constrained within the two kerbs.

• The Busway is a far more flexible form of public transport, allowing you to use just one mode of transport to get to your destination.

• A track requires less land than a normal road; consequently less money has been spent on land purchase.

• A track is better in terms of drainage than a solid road.

• The total width of The Busway Corridor includes the provision of a combined footpath, cycleway and bridleway.

Walking, cycle parking and horse riding

A path runs alongside the entire length of The Busway track. Built to accommodate walkers, cyclists and horse-riders it can be used to commute to and from work and access the Cambridgeshire countryside.

The path

• The northern section between St Ives and Cambridge the path is around four metres wide in most places; at pinch points the path is over 2.5 metres wide.

• The southern section between Trumpington Park & Ride, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Cambridge Rail Station the path is three metres wide. Horse-riders are not able to use the southern section.

• The path has a hard, black top surface along the route from Cambridge to Swavesey, as well as on the southern section.

• Work is scheduled to raise the level of the path and to add a black top surface to the section from Swavesey to St Ives. As originally planned, the path will be built above the level of the surrounding land so it will only flood for a few days, to a few weeks, a year during a typical winter. This will only occur when the River Great Ouse floods and the adjacent land is under water.

Bicycle parking

At most of the stops along The Busway track, covered and well lit bicycle storage is available. It will also be monitored by CCTV. Bicycle racks are as follows
