Low Road near Fenstanton opened three weeks ahead of schedule
Low Road, between Fenstanton and St Ives, re-opened three weeks ahead of schedule on Tuesday, 20 May after it was closed for vital works to rebuild an unsafe bridge.
The road was closed to through traffic since February 2008 to allow the bridge, known as White Bridge, to be completely rebuilt. Safety tests had shown the bridge to be unsafe and an urgent reconstruction was considered necessary.
A road closure was necessary during the £700,000 scheme as the works involved completely demolishing the old bridge and rebuilding a new structure.
Cambridgeshire County Councillor for The Hemingfords and Fenstanton, Ian Bates said: “Wherever possible, we would always try and avoid a complete road closure, but in this case it was unavoidable as the bridge was unsafe. We know that any road closure brings with it inconvenience to motorists and residents, and the project team have been working hard to ensure the road re-opens as quickly as possible and I am pleased to see it completed so far ahead of schedule
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community and local motorists for their patience whilst works were taking place. We would also like to emphasise that the businesses in Fenstanton are open as usual.”
