Aliwal Bridge, Whittlesey
The bridge has failed an assessment and is beyond repair. Consequently we have prepared a scheme for a replacement bridge. The new bridge construction will be jointly funded by the County Council, Anglian Water and the Middle Level Commissioners. Construction began on 20th August 2007 and is due to be completed by July 2008. The new bridge shall be wider than the existing one and will be a standard type bridge in reinforced concrete with steel parapets.
It will be necessary to close the road over the bridge and to restrict river traffic for short periods during the works, but every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the public. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times.
Demolition of Two Unsafe Disused Railway Bridges, Haslingfield Road and Comberton Road
Temporary three tonne weight limits have been put on the Haslingfield Road Bridge, Barton and Comberton Road Bridge, Comberton from June 30th 2008. The first bridge, located on the C259 Haslingfield Road, Barton, is programmed to be demolished in November 2008. The second structure located on the C260 Comberton Road, Comberton, has yet to be programmed, however.
The bridges are owned and maintained by the University of Cambridge and any final decision on the demolition is theirs. The County Council have been monitoring the bridges on behalf of the University for many years and there has been a slow deterioration in these bridges. Following the most recent bridge assessment, it became clear that demolition is the most cost effective solution and therefore the University is working in partnership with Cambridgeshire Highways to proceed with this.
The University of Cambridge are proposing to demolish these bridge by the end of July 2009 when the temporary weight limit will be removed.
