Getting involved

There are several ways that you can volunteer to help your local Highways service.

Highway Wardens

Many of Cambridgeshire's parishes and towns have signed up to our Highway Warden scheme. The Highway Wardens act as a liaison between their local community and their local Highways officer, helping to collate and solve local issues with roads and streets. They join the volunteering programme through their local town or parish council, and also help to lead on minor works funding applications.

There is more information about the Highway Wardens scheme on the link to the left.

Farmers volunteering to clear snow

Many of Cambridgeshire's farmers clear snow for their local community, using their own equipment. They join our volunteering programme through their local parish or town council and are insured to use their own equipment by Cambridgeshire County Council.

There is more information for farmers wanting to volunteer.

Volunteer for winter gritting

Many of Cambridgeshire's parishes and town and district councils are signed up to our winter gritting volunteer programme. This is where the parish has identified footpaths that they would like gritted in winter, for example, outside a school or a shop. The volunteers are put forward by the parish clerk, trained and insured by Highways and provided with a manual pushable spreader.

Being a good neighbour

If you are looking to grit paths or clear snow yourself, but not as part of your local town or parish scheme, have a look at the central Government guidance to the right. The Snow Code explains what you need to do to keep yourself and others safe.
