Gwydir Street party in Cambridge

What you need to know

Under the Road Traffic Regulation (Special Events) Act 2004 and the Traffic Management Act 2004 the County Council, as the Local Highways Authority, has a Duty to consider and manage the effect that event traffic or the event itself has on the County’s road network.

There are a considerable number of events that take place throughout Cambridgeshire and the impact this can have on the road network can be immense. It is our intention, therefore, to work with event organisers to assist them in managing their event traffic in order to maximise safety and minimise any congestion or disruption events may cause.

Historically police officers have been able to provide any necessary traffic management associated with events but this is not now the case and event organisers must take on this responsibility.

To help us to help you, the Traffic Manager’s Team needs to be involved in any event planning process in the very early stages. Event organisers are requested to inform the TM Team of their event, sufficiently far in advance of its scheduled date, to enable the traffic arrangements to be carefully considered and any necessary amendments suggested.

The HMSO publication ‘The Good Practice Safety Guide’ is also a good source of information when planning small and sporting events on the highway.
