Length and width of the access road
The road will be a total of 1.5 miles in length. It will be 6.5 metres in width, with 1.5 metre wide ‘on-road’ red-surfaced cycleways on each side of the road, so the total road width (including the cycle lanes) will be 9.5 metres.
Prevention of through traffic at Addenbrooke’s
Through traffic from the Access Road to Long Road and Babraham Road through the Addenbrooke’s site will be prevented.
Addenbrooke’s and their consultants are currently working to develop a traffic management system
to prevent through traffic.
Street lighting and signage
The route will be lit for safety reasons and the design of lamps and columns will be integrated with the urban development to keep light pollution to a minimum.
Through the "green wedge" (Hobson's Brook to Addenbrooke's Hospital) lighting will be of a lower intesity and confined to the footway.
Signage will be kept to a minimum to prevent clutter.
The junctions
The junction of the access road with Hauxton Road will have 2 entry lanes from Hauxton Road south turning right into the new access road, and 1 entry lane from Hauxton Road north turning left into the access road.
Two alternative designs for this junction were initially considered – a roundabout and a traffic signal-controlled junction. Traffic modelling showed us that a roundabout would mean longer queue lengths than a signal-controlled junction.
The traffic lights would be coordinated with other sets of traffic lights in the area and adjustments could be made as necessary to prevent queuing back to the M11.
If the proposed development at Trumpington Meadows gets planning consent, then additional lanes will be built and a crossroads formed.
Landscaping
Landscaping is an important part of the road’s design, as it will be one of the first things visitors will see when entering Cambridge. Additional trees, shrubs and hedges will be planted to improve the landscape of the area.
Along some of the access road, a boulevard will be created with trees on both sides at regular intervals.
New bridge over the railway line
A reinforced concrete structure with 3 main spans to provide an ‘open aspect’ has been designed to provide space beneath for future access by pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and rail.
Speed limits
A 40mph speed limit will be in force from Hauxton Road to Shelford Road, and the rest of the road will be subject to 30 mph.
