Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

Why is a new road needed?

Answer:

The Addenbrooke’s Access Road has a major part to play in the development of the area known as the “Cambridge Southern Fringe”. The Cambridge Southern Fringe consists of five main sites:

  • To the east of Trumpington - Clay Farm
  • To the east of Trumpington - the showground site
  • To the south – Glebe Farm
  • To the south-west – the former Monsanto site
  • The expansion of Addenbrooke’s Hospital

Once built, the road will unlock land for housing development, helping to contribute towards the required 47,000 new homes identified in Cambridgeshire’s Structure Plan, which is the strategic framework for land use planning in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough up to 2016.

The road is also essential to allow the expansion of Addenbrooke’s Hospital to take place, which will ensure future high quality healthcare and employment opportunities are provided for people in this area.

Finally, the new road will play a vital part in reducing traffic congestion on some of the existing roads in the local area.
