As part of the Planning Application, an Environmental Statement was compiled to look at the possible effects of the road on its surrounding environment.
A non-technical summary of this statement can be found on the right hand side and below is a summary of the main issues.
Noise
Road schemes and new developments in Cambridge can often have high fences, walls and houses backing onto the road, which can create a
poor sense of urban design.
The housing in the new developments will look out onto the Access Road. In order to reduce noise from traffic, a low-noise road surface will be used.
Wildlife and biodiversity
The route that was chosen for the access road was the least environmentally damaging of all the options considered and we will also do everything we can to ease the effects of construction.
Some of the things we will look to provide include:
- Appropriate fencing arrangements to protect and allow appropriate access for wildlife.
- Measures to protect and prevent the pollution of watercourses.
- Bat and bird boxes in the bridge structure.
Air quality
As with any road scheme such as this, where there is an increase in traffic due to new developments, air quality will be affected.
More properties will experience an improvement in air quality than those experiencing deterioration, as a lot of traffic is being removed from Trumpington. The route that was chosen means that the least number of properties would experience deterioration, compared with the other routes that were considered.
