Buses, along with other vehicles, leave St. Andrew's Street along Hobson Street and King Street and currently experience some delays. Therefore we have developed ideas to ease congestion and improve safety along this route as complementary to the Cambridge Core Traffic Scheme Stage 4.
The proposals are shown in Plan 4 (PDF 745KB) and include:
- Additional lines and signage to highlight the presence of cyclists.
- A new loading area and more space for contraflow cyclists. This would mean the loss of about 24 motorcycle parking spaces on the north side of King Street without crossing the contraflow cycle area. We are exploring the possibility of providing more motorcycle parking at Park Street car park, which is about 5 minutes walk away. Motorcycle parking at Park Street car park is believed to provide a more secure alternative to the current on-street provision and some of the current lockers, which are currently under used, could be made available to motorcyclists for daily or weekly hire.
- Four of the six blue badge parking spaces would be removed between midnight and 10am (when the bays are rarely used) to allow for a new loading area which will give more opportunity for large delivery vehicles to park without causing an obstruction.
