Cambridge Core Traffic Scheme - Stage 4
What's happening?
On 21st May 2008 significant changes are being made to the way people access the St Andrew’s Street / Emmanuel Street area to improve public transport and improve the environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
This is part of a wider scheme to reduce congestion and improve the environment in the City centre. The scheme was approved following public consultation and we are now introducing traffic controls in St Andrew’s Street and Emmanuel Street as part of the 4th stage of the Cambridge Core Traffic Scheme.
From 6am Emmanuel Street becomes one-way from Drummer Street towards St Andrew’s Street and access to St Andrew’s Street from Regent Street will be restricted to authorised buses, taxis and cyclists. A rising bollard will enforce this access restriction. For other traffic, access to St Andrew’s Street from Regent Street must be made via Park Terrace, Parker Street, Drummer Street and Emmanuel Street.
St Andrew’s Street and Emmanuel Street are key bus stop areas for the city centre and services using the stops frequently experience traffic congestion causing delays. New retail developments within the City centre and additional housing in the area have increased the demand for access to the area and bus passenger numbers is expected to increase.
Improving this area is a key part of the Cambridge Core Traffic Scheme Stage 4 – a project to improve conditions for public transport, reduce congestion and pollution as well as improve safety in the city centre.
