The results of a public consultation on traffic in the Maids Causeway / Victoria Avenue area led the County Council to investigate the provision of a pedestrian crossing by James Street, 20mph speed restriction, heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) restriction and raised tables.

As a result of these investigations Cambridgeshire County Council is now conducting a public consultation on a 24 hour 7.5tonne weight limit along Maids Causeway and also the installation of a Zebra crossing near to James Street.

Whilst there was some support from local residents for traffic calming measures, the survey work showed that there is already reasonably good compliance with the speed limit. In addition it was suggested that the introduction of the speed cushions could potentially lead to poorer air quality and they would be a visual intrusion in a conservation area. For these reasons Cambridgeshire County Council did not recommend that speed reduction measures, like speed cushions, were progressed at this time.

However, as the population of Cambridgeshire continues to grow and new developments are built transport demand in Cambridge city centre is likely to increase. In the future the County Council believes it is likely that Maids Causeway could become an important route for public transport and as such it may be that further traffic management measures become necessary. Work is currently underway on a longer term transport strategy for Cambridgeshire and the needs of the Maids Causeway and Victoria Avenue area will be reviewed again as part of this process.
