Ely Crossing

Ely Crossing, the area around Ely station, is currently heavily congested with lorries and other larger vehicles not being able to use the low underpass.  Improving the Ely Crossing has been identified as one of Cambridgeshire County Council's key infrastructure projects.

The Ely Crossing leaflet provides information about the work that has taken place in the last few years and various options to help ease congestion in the southern Ely area.

Current works

As part of the environmental impact assessment, we are updating last year's option appraisal.  This includes updating and evaluating details of all five options we consulted on, and is expected to be completed in the summer.  Cabinet will then be asked to consider the report an decide which one of the five options to take forward for detailed planning, if any at all.

We are currently also developing the detailed design of the preferred Route B and evaluating its environmental impact and the effect on the conservation area and cathedral setting.

Next steps

The updated options appraisal is scheduled to be completed in the summer and will be available on this website, via the District and County Council Offices and local libraries.

Objectives

Below are the objectives for possible solutions to the traffic problems in the Ely station area.  All possible solutions are measured against this list of objectives.

  • Support economic growth locally, regionally and nationally,
  • reduced journey times on the A142,
  • reduced risk of delays to rail services,
  • reduced noise and improved air quality in the Ely station area,
  • reduced congestion near Ely rail station,
  • reduced accidents risks at the rail bridge and level crossing,
  • improved access to Ely station, especially for pedestrians and cyclists,
  • reduced delays to bus services between Ely and Newmarket.
