Safety inspections on cycleways shall be carried out as shown below.

Safety Inspections are carried out at the frequencies set out above to identify and deal with defects that require prompt attention because they represent an immediate or imminent hazzard, or because there is a risk of short-trem structural deterioration of the footway.

During safety inspections, the following defects shall be identified and temporary repairs carried out within 24 hours.

  • Dangerously rocking slabs, projections or trips greater than 20mm, associated with slabs ironwork or any sort of kerb.
  • Isolated potholes away from the edge of the cycleway more than 25mm deep and have an area of 0.1sq m or more.
  • Cracks in cycleways greater than 25mm wide.
  • Kerbing edging or channel defects.
  • Missing, damaged or defective ironwork.
  • Traffic signs/signals in a dangerous condition.
  • Street lighting columns with the door removed.
  • Standing water over the full width of the footway or at a depth that constitutes a danger.
  • Pedestrian rails, barriers or fences damaged that constitute a danger.

During safety inspections, any overhead wires in a dangerous condition shall be reported to those responsible within 24 hours.
