Persons wishing to construct a vehicular crossing must apply to the County Council four weeks before it is required to commence work. You can apply through Cambridgeshire Direct. Work should not commence until written authorisation has been issued. This authorisation is necessary even if planning permission has been granted for the access.
It is illegal to construct an access in certain positions without planning permission.
In order to construct or change a vehicular access onto a classified road you will need planning permission and we will be able to confirm if the road is classified or not. Documentary evidence of Planning Permission must be provided to the Highway Authority before any works will be permitted to start within the highway of a classified road.
Planning permission may be required to construct a crossing onto an unclassified road. The Highway Authority will provide independent permission to construct a vehicular crossing on an unclassified road. However, this permission is not planning permission and you are strongly advised to contact the District Planning Authority to ensure that the proposed works will not be a breach of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and need separate Planning Permission.
In addition to notifying the Council, through Cambridgeshire Direct, as above, you are required to notify the Street Works Coordinator of your works. The forms for street works notification, and the traffic lights form, should temporary traffic lights be required as part of the traffic management of your works, are available here.
The construction of the crossing shall be carried out at the applicant's expense by a contractor who is on the County Council's approved list for the construction of vehicular crossings over footways and verges. Each list is area dependant.
