A brief description of the different types of surveys that are used to provide condition data to assist in the prioritisation of the resurfacing and reconstruction schemes are as follows.

• Deflectograph - This is used to measure the deflection of the road surface under a standard load.  The measured deflection is then used to assess the strength of the construction of the road.
• SCRIM - The Sideway-force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine (SCRIM) is used to measure the wet skid resistance of the surface of the road.
• Coarse Visual Inspection (CVI) - This acredited survey is a "coarse" driven visual inspection of the condition of the road/footway surface.
• Detailed Visual Inspection (DVI) - This acredited survey is a more detailed, walked visual inspection of the condition of the road/footway surface.
• SCANNER - The Surface Condition Assessment of the National NEtwork of Roads (SCANNER) automatic machine survey measures the condition of the road surface under normal traffic speeds.
