Cambridgeshire County Council has a statutory duty to maintain roads and paths (the highway) on adopted roads within the county. Maintenance of the highway includes making safe potentially dangerous defects such as missing paving stones.
The responsibility for dealing with alleged offenders with respect to the theft of any highway property lies with Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Any suspected theft of highway paving stones should therefore be reported directly to the Police in the first instance.
However, the paving stones may have been removed legally by either the council or a utility company. In these cases, the area should be adequately signed and guarded to protect the highway user. Should the site in question be an adopted highway, we will arrange for works to make the area safe. In the event that the area in question is unadopted highway then we will inform the customer accordingly.
