Surface dressing

Surface dressing is applied when it is necessary to seal porous surfaces, bind surfaces against deterioration and to restore skidding resistance on all roads in rural and urban areas as appropriate.

However, intervention levels for skidding resistance will only apply to primary and main distributor roads.
All other roads will be maintained to the highest possible standard within cash limits.

Where consideration is being given to the use of surface dressing on busy roads in urban areas, a high quality binder must be specified, or consideration given to thin coat surfacing or carriageway slurry seals, particularly where parked vehicles prevent the embedment of the stone chips by passing traffic.

Any decision must be confirmed with the Network Manager.
