Highway drainage is provided to prevent the flooding of the highway and to ensure water falling onto the highway is removed as soon as possible into positive drainage systems or natural watercourses.
It is important to prevent water getting into the construction of the road as this may lead to an increase in the rate of deterioration.
Drainage systems are usually made up of
- gullies
- catchpits, interceptors, soakaways and manholes
- kerb offlets
- culverts
- piped drainage
- grips
- open ditches
- sustainable drainage systems (SUDS)
We will investigate all flooding problems reported to us on the highway, although the responsibility may lie with others
- private individuals
- adjacent landowners
- District Councils
- Water Authorities
- Environment Agency
- Drainage Boards
To report standing water or a blocked drainage system on or related to the highway, please use the highways defects form.
If the defect constitutes a danger and requires urgent attention, please use the number provided.
Our maintenance policies and standards relevant to drainage are included in the Highway Maintenance Network Management Policies and Standards
