Bus priority measures between Hinchingbrooke Hospital and St. Ives have been developed to extend the benefits of the proposed Cambridgeshire Guided Busway (CGB) to Huntingdon.
Improvements to Huntingdon Bus Station and an improved interchange at the Railway Station are also planned. Detailed proposals have been developed for a contra-flow bus lane on the ring road from George Street to Prince’s Street, (bus station) in Huntingdon, which will allow buses to turn right from George Street.
Pedestrian and cycle links in the area will be maintained and in addition to the bus priority facilities, an off-road shared pedestrian/cycle facility is proposed alongside Walden Road through to the present bus station.
The proposals are within a conservation area and County officers are working closely with both the District Council officers and Clegg Developments, who are undertaking the adjoining redevelopment, to ensure the design is sympathetic to the surrounding area.
The present layout of the bus station is not ideal for buses to enter the bus station from the north. The District Council are considering the long-term re-arrangement of the bus station but in the interim have developed a temporary layout of the bus station to accommodate the contra-flow bus lane.
These measures alone would produce a maximum time saving of nearly 10 minutes, which would reduce the bus journey by 76% compared with the journey around the ring road and bus companies have indicated that the contra-flow bus lane and the improved interchange at Huntingdon Station will make it easier for them to extend services to the station.
