Sawtry Speed Reduction Scheme
Extras

Sawtry is a growing residential settlement with large numbers of young people. The Parish Council and County Members requested that the speed limit through the village be reduced from 40mph to 30mph.

This alone would not automatically reduce vehicle speeds and additional measures may also be required to bring speeds down. For a 30mph to be effective it must be coupled with both ‘soft’ and physical speed reduction measures.

Government advice says new speed limits should be introduced only when existing speeds are within 20% or 7mph (whichever is greater) of the proposed limit. Speed limits help keep the roads safe for drivers and other road users and are more effective when drivers understand why they are there. The wrong speed limit will not only be ineffective but will undermine the value of other speed limits.

The proposals for Sawtry are designed to inform drivers that they are entering a semi-urban environment where they need to reduce their speeds and drive in an appropriate fashion. Primarily the targeted roads involve Green End Road, High Street, Glatton Road and Gidding Road.

The proposals will be on show in the Old School hall on 7th June and 8th June between 1pm and 6.30pm where council officers will be available to answer any questions. From 9th to 16th June they can be viewed in Sawtry Library during normal opening times.
