Riding a bike in Cambridgeshire provides an alternative way to travel. It offers a way of beating congestion in the towns and cities for commuters, access to healthcare and education and is environmentally friendly; as well as being a leisure activity. Cambridgeshire has some great roads to ride.
It is essential for anyone thinking about starting to ride, or who already rides, to approach motorcycling responsibly. Motorcyclists account for around 20% of all those killed and seriously injured on Cambridgeshire’s roads but are only 2% of the road user population. Many of these serious and fatal injuries happened to riders in the 30+ age group, riding sports bikes for leisure purposes; when the rider was overtaking near road junctions or cornering, often on left hand bends.
In 2005, 10 riders in Cambridgeshire didn’t make it home and a further 100 were badly injured. By the end of October 2006, another 13 riders failed to return from their journey. This is the down-side of biking and why the Council is spending money trying to solve the problem.
We are actively addressing this problem in a number of ways. Your County Council has a Motorcycling Strategy to help riders as well as supporting the BikeSafe initiative. Other innovative measures are also being used.
