Walking
-
Walking Bus.pdf (1631Kb): where groups of children are escorted by trained volunteer adults, picking up children on a set route.
- Park and walk: parents park at an agreed location at a distance from the school and walk their children to school. It can also be combined with a Walking Bus.
- Special events: Schools can take part in national campaigns such as Walk to School Week or establish a regular Walk to School day each week.
Cycling
- Special days and events: many children prefer to cycle to school and this can be encouraged through National Bike Week, a 'Cycle to School' day and other events.
- Cycle training: the County Council provides on and off-road cycle training.
Promoting use of bus and rail
- Pupils could be encouraged to research local public transport provision and the information placed on school notice boards.
- They could be involved in developing a code of conduct for bus users in conjunction with bus operators.
- The school could operate a ‘buddy’ scheme for pupils using the same bus or train route.
Improving driver behaviour
- As well as reminding parents and carers
in a newsletter, schools can be more pro-active with a ‘make the commitment’ style campaign, by asking parents and carers to positively sign up to not parking on the zig-zags or directly outside the school gate.
