Cambridgeshire Bus Strategy
"To provide an efficient and affordable bus service that makes a major contribution to the County's sustainable transport objectives in terms of transfer of journeys from the car, promoting economic development and providng access to communities" - vision of the Cambridgeshire Bus Strategy
The Transport Act 2000 gave new powers to local authorities to promote bus use. These powers include:
- Quality Partnerships. Local authorities are able to set standards in relation to quality facilities they provide such as bus lanes and shelters. Buses and services not reaching the required standards could be excluded from using them
- Quality Contract. A local authority may decide that services on particular routes should be put out to tender. Exclusive rights to use such routes may be granted to one or more operators, and others could be excluded from using them
The Cambridgeshire Bus Strategy therefore sets out how we intend to make use of these powers to provide high quality bus services in the county. The strategy is not intended to be a detailed action plan; it establishes the framework around which such actions can be defined. Therefore, the Bus Strategy identifies:
- how bus services will be provided over the LTP period
- the measure that the County Council in partnership with the District Councils and bus operators will take to foster bus use, and
- how the strategic role of the bus will be developed within and beyond the first LTP period.
