Cambridgeshire County Council in partnership with the district councils is in the process of developing a long-term transport strategy to cover the period 2006-2021
The strategy is being developed for the following reasons:
- to ensure that the scale of developments in Cambridgeshire can be accommodated in a sustainable way
- to provide input into regional strategies such as the regional spatial strategy and to help ensure that the county meets its commitments in delivering these strategies
- to complement the local transport plan, which is restricted both by a five year time period and by government guidance which sets out what it should contain
- to provide the county and its partners with a solid base for bidding for funding from government for transport schemes related to development, and
- to support the Local Plan / Local development framework process currently being undertaken by the district councils.
A high level strategy has been completed, which can be viewed from the link on the right. The main recommendation is that even with improvements to public transport, walking and cycling facilities, some kind of demand management measures need to be applied in order to control growth in travel by car.
Work is continuing with our partners and stakeholders to develop exactly what this package of measures should consist of and to determine the most appropriate demand management measures for Cambridge. Please see the 'Tackling Congestion in Cambridgeshire' pages for further information.
