Holding a street party

Holding a street party is an established part of British culture and they are a great way for people to meet their neighbours and strengthen community feeling. We want to encourage street parties, especially for national events such as the Queen's Jubilee, Big Lunch, Olympics, and Paralympics.

Please be aware that applications for street parties for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee must be with us by 4pm on Monday 21st May.

Street parties normally take place in quiet residential streets and are for the enjoyment of residents, family and friends. Cul de sacs are often ideal for street parties, but where a street provides for through traffic, a street party may still be possible, provided traffic levels are low and a convenient alternative route is available. Busier through routes are not usually suitable for street parties, although you may wish to consider other forms of gathering, such as using a local park or front gardens. If you would like to close a road for a street party, please follow the guidelines below or contact the team using the telephone numbers on the right.

If the road you wish to close is a local road only and gets little or no through traffic, you will not need any trained people or specific signs to do this. Please complete the Street party road closure application form (109Kb) and return it to us. You are not required to have public liability insurance.

Closing roads with "through traffic"

If you do wish to close a road which is used by through traffic, this will be considered as an Event Road Closure. This is because there are likely to be significant implications for the travelling public, businesses and emergency services. You will need to complete the Event road closure application form(153Kb) and return it to us 12 weeks before the event. You will also need;
