It’s too late to register to vote in the General Election on 8 June 2017. You can still register for future elections.
To be eligible to vote you must:
- be 18 or over on the day of the election ('polling day')
- be a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen
- be resident at an address in the area you wish to vote in
- not be legally excluded from voting.

Councillors are elected using the First Past the Post system. You vote for one candidate in your local area and the candidate with the most votes wins.
You can vote in person at a polling station, by post, or you can get someone else to vote for you (this is called voting by proxy). Find out more about how to vote.
Your local City or District Council have information on how to register to vote in your area, where your local polling station is and how to vote.
