Cambridgeshire will be joining communities across the country by taking part in the national commemoration of the 70th anniversary of VE Day with the lighting of an official beacon.
The public event is being held from 9pm to 9.45pm at the Mound, Shire Hall, Cambridge on May 8 and will include the chance for people to record their memories of Victory in Europe Day
A tribute will be made in respect of those who took part in WW2 as part of the even on 8 May. which will also see more than 100 beacons lit across the United Kingdom. A special V shaped beacon is being used to mark the anniversary.
The beacon lighting is the start of a number of events and activities this summer which will be taking place across the county to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Cambridgeshire County Council, alongside partners which so far include Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council are coordinating a number of events and activities under the title of The Home Front: Cambridgeshire Commemorates the end of WW2.
This will all take place between May and September and will be an opportunity for Cambridgeshire residents to come together to remember the wartime effort and wartime Britain, reminisce about the 'unforgettable forties' era and capture some of the celebratory mood of the time.
Elaine Matthews, Supporting Businesses and Communities Operations Manager, said: "We look forward to people coming and helping us and the nation commemorate this anniversary with the lighting of the beacon. Whether it be a community tea dance, the researching and sharing of stories of the time, a lindy hop event, raising morale through music or sport, a 'make do and mend' community craft project, creating a 'Dig For Victory' garden or giving your fete or festival a forties theme. We are encouraging residents and groups to design and deliver activities within their communities that motivate and encourage people to get involved.
"We'd love to hear about any plans so that we can include them in our programme. You'll be able to find out more and what's taking place online at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/ww2 "
