Residents from across the country are being invited to ‘Plant a tree for the Jubilee’ to create a legacy for the future.
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and businesses have been encouraged to play their part to enhance the environment by planting trees during the planting season from October to March.
Over 1 million trees have already been planted nationwide including a large number in Cambridgeshire. Her Majesty The Queen has sent a special note of thanks to those who have planted trees as part of the project
Cllr Lucy Nethsingha, Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Enhancing Cambridgeshire’s environment is one of the joint administration’s key priorities, so we fully embrace this initiative and would encourage everyone to get involved.
“I can’t wait to see all the trees being planted throughout the county, helping us to make it a greener and more tranquil place to live in and enjoy.
“As a county our communities embraced the first season of planting with great vigour so I hope very much that schools and communities will be out again in the autumn planting season.”
With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC has and continues to encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation, which will benefit future generations.
As well as leaving a lasting legacy for the Queen, the tree planting will support the environmental ambitions of the County Council including the target to achieve zero carbon emissions.
Planting will also help remedy the fact that the county is among the least wooded areas of the UK and will create an improved natural environment for residents.”
Everyone is invited to take part and it is easy to get involved – whether you are an expert gardener or complete novice there is something you can do. This ranges from individuals planting trees on their private land, community planting projects, schools planting trees on their premises and businesses setting up tree planting projects with employees.
The Woodland Trust is once again offering free trees to schools and community groups. To request a pack for delivery in November, please visit The Woodland Trust website. Once you have planted your tree, do not forget to log it on the Queen’s Green Canopy Map. This can be done retrospectively if you planted a tree last year and forgot to log it! Please note that the map will close for new entries at the end of December 2022.
