Cambridgeshire County Council is committed to making sure there is continued full public access to Castle Mound and surrounding green space in any decision regarding the future of Shire Hall. This is further protected by site remaining in public ownership due to the recent proposal to lease it to Brookgate
But in response to an application received on 10 June under the Commons Act 2006, to register Castle Mound and the surrounding green area as a town or village green, Full Council today (15 October) took the unanimous decision to ask Suffolk County Council to take on the responsibility to process and determine the application.
While the Council could have determined the application themselves, this decision was made to avoid a conflict of interest.
Suffolk County Council have experience and expertise in such applications, and if they agree to take on the responsibility, a final decision on the Matter will be made by their Development Control Committee.
Regardless of the outcome, public access to Castle Mound and its surrounding land will be protected by Cambridgeshire County Council, who are working with the successful applicant for the lease of the site to enhance this Historic Monument in the future.
