A ground breaking volunteer project in Wisbech wants young people to bank on their talent and design a new currency for the town.

The competition is to design a new "˜time credit' note, which volunteers will gain for giving their time to help their community and they can spend on activities and events.

It's all part of the innovative Cambridgeshire Time Credit scheme which is being rolled out across the county. People using the scheme can help their community by giving their time to projects and organisations and as a thank you receive time credits. These  can be used to access events, training and leisure services or to trade time with neighbours. The programme is being run by Spice, a social enterprise specialising in time credits and is funded by Cambridgeshire County Council and CHS Group.

The competition launches on 1 September and competition forms can be picked up from Wisbech Library, Community House or Spinney Adventure Playground. The deadline for submissions is Friday 19 September to submit your design and return to the above organisations.  A panel of judges including Cambridgeshire County Councillor Steve Criswell will announce the winner on Tuesday 23rd September.

The Time Credit scheme will be rolled out in Wisbech later this year after a successful pilot in 2013 at The Spinney, Wisbech Children's Centre, The Ferry Project and The Orchards School.

Wendy Lansdown, Community Engagement Programme Manager at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: ""We're very excited to be working with Spice and local people to make the Time Credits scheme happen. This competition is the first step in helping bring the programme alive for people living in Wisbech. We really want to tap into young people's creativity and find a design that's representative of Wisbech."

The winner of the competition will have their design used on the time credits. The new credit note will be printed live at the Velo Festival event on Saturday 27 September, 2 - 4pm at Spinney Adventure Playground.
